Reversing

There are two main types of reversing:

  1. Straight-line reversing

    • Keep both hands lightly on the wheel.

    • Look mainly out the rear window over your left shoulder.

    • Check mirrors briefly every 3–4 seconds.

  2. Reversing around a corner

    • Stay close to the kerb without clipping it.

    • Use your left mirror to gauge tyre position.

    • Adjust steering in small increments — overcorrection leads to S-shaped paths.

Extra tips and tricks:

  • Use slow, consistent speed — faster reversing reduces reaction time.

  • For tight spots, creep in 10–15 cm at a time, rechecking surroundings between each movement.

  •  When reversing, be mindful of your increased blind spots. Always scan your surroundings thoroughly—look left, right, and behind you to ensure you’re aware of any obstacles or pedestrians.

  • Keep scanning your mirrors and blindspots regularly until you have finished reversing.

  •  For the best visibility, primarily look over your left shoulder while reversing. This position allows you to see straight back and helps you gauge your surroundings effectively.

  • Keep your speed to a walking pace when reversing. This slower speed enhances your control and accuracy, allowing you to react quickly if needed.

  • Remember that when you reverse, the back of the car moves in the same direction as the steering wheel, while the front wheels turn in the opposite direction.

  • Be cautious with sharp turns in tight spaces, such as narrow garages or driveways. Sharp turns can cause the front and back of the car to move unpredictably. Instead, make small quarter or half turns to maintain better control.

  • When reversing in a straight line, keep your eyes mainly to the rear but glance forward and side mirrors every few seconds.

  • Around corners, turn your head in the direction of travel and move slowly — the slower you go, the easier to make small steering corrections.

  • Keep one hand on the top of the steering wheel for smoother control in reverse.
