Motorways and Highways
These are my how-to tips for motorway and highway driving. For detailed information on New Zealand's driving rules please refer to the Official New Zealand Road Code and drive.govt.nz.

Many drivers tend to speed up as they approach the 100 km/h sign. However, it’s important to maintain a speed of 50 km/h (or the relevant signposted speed) until after you pass the sign. This will help you stay safe and compliant with speed regulations.
-
On-ramps can feel daunting, but it’s crucial not to enter the motorway too slowly. After passing the 100 km/h sign, quickly accelerate to at least 85-95 km/h. This allows you to merge smoothly into the slow lane at the end of the dotted lines. Remember that vehicles on the on-ramp do not have right of way, so be prepared to adjust your speed as necessary and keep checking your right mirror and blind spot.
-
Keep your grip on the steering wheel relaxed as you accelerate, and look for gaps in traffic ahead of time to facilitate a smooth merge.
-
Keep to the far left by the solid white line when merging regardless of the congestion levels. This habit ensures that you find your gap and are at the appropriate speed when merging with vehicles already on the motorway.
-
Some on-ramps have dedicated merging lanes just before the on-ramp starts. Stay alert for these and adjust your merging strategy accordingly.
-
When on the motorway, maintain a habit of checking your mirrors every 15 seconds, regardless of your speed or traffic conditions. This will help you stay aware of your surroundings and any vehicles approaching from behind.
